According to the report, the former Colegio de San Juan de Letran standout battled for a rebound against Chinanu Onuaku halfway through the second quarter which eventually resulted in their hard collision. Abando then lost his balance and fell to the floor, forcing him to miss the rest of the match.
The report added that Abando underwent further medical examination on Friday, December 29, which found him to be suffering from fractures to his third and fourth lumbar vertebrae, sprained wrist ligaments, and a concussion.
According to the same report, the required timeline for recovery is at least four weeks.
The official stressed that Abando's absence will greatly affect their campaign as the reigning KBL champions sit in seventh with a 10-16 win-loss record. Abando is also tipped to miss the KBL All-Star Game dunk contest due to the injuries.
"Abando is a member of our team and also a member of the Philippine national team. It makes no sense for him to injure his spine just from competing for a rebound," the unnamed official said.
"If you take a break for 4 weeks, you will not be able to participate in the All-Star Game Dunk Contest or play in the EASL (East Asian Super League)."
"This is a huge loss.”
